Jacksonville, FL -Dr. Dennis McCarthy, an anesthesiologist at Memorial Hospital for more than 15 years, is the first Memorial Physician ever to be named a National Frist Award winner. The Frist Humanitarian Award is highest honor an employee, physician or volunteer can receive at HCA, the parent company of Memorial Hospital.
Dr. McCarthy is being honored not only for his clinical successes, but also for his work in the community. In the last 29 years he has taken dozens of mission trips to seven different countries to provide medical care. Since the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010, Dr. McCarthy has taken numerous trips to that country, seeing almost 10,000 patients! Dr. McCarthy is also being recognized for his dedication to his church and his volunteer work at the City Rescue Mission, where he and his wife started a medical clinic.
Perhaps the greatest demonstration of Dr. McCarthy’s commitment to others occurred while he was serving those in need in Ghana, Africa, where Dr. McCarthy contracted a potentially deadly infection. He did not end his missions even after that life threatening event, but continues to work to provide care in dangerous and impoverished environments at all levels of personal sacrifice.
The Frist Humanitarian Awards were created to recognize one employee, one physician and one volunteer at each HCA-affiliated facility who demonstrate extraordinary concern for the welfare and happiness of patients and their community. Additionally, one national winner will be chosen from each of those categories and will be honored at the company’s Nashville, TN, headquarters. The Frist Humanitarian Awards are given annually in recognition of the humanitarian spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr., a founder of HCA.
“I am very proud to have the opportunity to present these awards,” said Richard M. Bracken., HCA CEO. “Dr. McCarthy is an inspiration to all our employees and volunteers. His generosity and dedication serve as a living example of HCA's commitment to the care and improvement of human life.”
