At the Memorial Heart Center Valve Clinic, we have an experienced medical staff that is trained in both the detection and treatment of valve conditions. Our cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons work as a team to get you the care you need. Signs of Heart Valve Disease

  • Shortness of breath or breathing too hard
  • Chest pain and pressure or a feeling of squeezing or heaviness
  • Swelling of the legs
  • Fainting, dizziness, lightheadedness
  • Heart murmur (turbulent flow of blood) heard by a physician

Heart Valve Conditions

Aortic or Mitral Regurgitation - The aortic valve or the mitral valve does not close properly, allowing blood to leak through when it is not supposed to.

Aortic or Mitral Stenosis - The aortic valve or mitral valve has an abnormal narrowing that does not allow enough blood to flow through the valve into the lungs and the rest of the body.

Initial Evaluation

Your Initial Evaluation Includes:

  • A comprehensive review of your medical history
  • Physical examination
  • Echocardiogram (painless ultrasound of the heart)
  • Discussion of test results and treatment plan options.

Treatment of Heart Valve Disease

Proper treatment of heart valve disease is different for each individual patient and depends on how severe the symptoms are and how well the heart is functioning. For many patients, this may mean medications and close observation. For other patients, surgical valve repair or replacement may be recommended. Possible surgical options include:
