Jacksonville, FL – Memorial Hospital is excited to announce it is entering the next phase of its $23 million ER expansion and renovation project.  The project began in early 2017 and has now reached a significant milestone.  For the past few months, construction crews have worked inside and outside the main ER to upgrade some of the patient care rooms and prepare the area for the next stage of construction. Now, work will begin outside the main ER entrance.

“This is a large step for us as we enter the heart of the project,” said Chief Operating Officer Bobby McCullough.  “This renovation and expansion project is driven by the community’s increased demand for our emergency services.  By expanding our ER, we’ll be able to streamline care and treat patients even more timely and efficiently than we do today.”

Starting today, the main entrance of the ER will close for construction. Patients and visitors will access the ER through a new, temporary entrance on the east side of the building parallel to University Boulevard.  New signage has been installed to direct patients and visitors on where to park and how to access the new ER entrance and check-in area.  The hospital has added free valet service at the new entrance to ensure the smoothest process for patients and visitors accessing the ED.

“We know that construction and detours can be challenging for patients and visitors, which is why we are doing everything we can to minimize any disruption, while allowing us to continue to provide the same excellent experience to our patients during construction,” said McCullough.

Project improvements include:

  • Addition of approximately 23,000 square feet of new building construction
  • Renovation of existing main ED
  • Relocation of the pediatric ER rooms, entrance and waiting area to the main ER building
  • Construction of a new rooftop helipad
  • Reconfigured parking for patients, visitors and staff
  • Expanded and remodeled entryway to unite all adult and pediatric ER services under one roof

Each year Memorial treats about 120,000 ER patients, 90,000 of whom are treated at our main ER campus, making the Memorial Hospital main ER the single largest ER in Jacksonville.
