Memorial Hospital’s Heart Center performs traditional open heart surgeries as well as cutting edge minimally invasive heart surgeries using the daVinci® Robot and very small incisions.
Minimally invasive heart surgery can be used for the following procedures:
- Coronary bypass surgery
- Valve surgeries, including mitral valve
- Surgery to treat atrial fibrillation
- Various other procedures to treat heart defects
There are many advantages of minimally invasive heart surgery. The smaller incisions result in less pain, minimal scarring, less blood loss and a lower risk of infection. Since the breastbone is not split, there is also reduced trauma and pain, resulting in a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery so the patient can get back to the things they love to do. Minimally invasive surgery may not be right for everyone however. The cardiologist will work with each patient to determine if it is the best option.
We are the leader in Jacksonville for complex mitral valve repairs that alleviate the need for blood thinners, like Coumadin.
